Hurricane season is around the corner, and we all know what that means… protect yourself and protect your property! While it is troublesome to contemplate the risks of a hurricane to your vacation home, if last year’s hurricane season is any indication, it pays to be prepared. A recent study from the American Meteorological Society suggests that coming storms may increase in intensity, impending hurricane winds could travel up to six percent faster, with added rainfall of twenty-four percent.

Don’t let these updates frighten you. There are certainly ways you can mitigate conceivable storm damage. Being prepared is essential. Having a plan for distribution disruption is key to getting back on your feet again, after the storm passes.

Here are some of the valuable steps to protecting your property during this time of the year:

(1) Declutter drains and gutters and install check valves in your plumbing

(2) Make plans for your properties based on your specific location and community

(3) Acquaint your guests with your evacuation zone, evacuation route, and shelter locations

(4) Make sure all important property documentation is secure or digitally protected

As a Property Manager, you have a unique set of items to double check in the event of a hurricane. Having a cancellation policy that is clear and flexible for your guests is essential. Another helpful pointer is to partner with other property managers in your market to manage relocations, this avoids costly relocation fees. Anticipating outcomes beyond our control is never something we look forward to, however, being prepared can make this situation a smoother one.
